Windows7下未安装Edge时的网站测试及相关问题咨询

Hey there! Let’s break down your three questions about testing Microsoft Edge on your Windows 7 setup (with Firefox Quantum 60, IE 11, and Chrome 66 already installed):

1. Can I install MS Edge while keeping IE 11, and will they be separate browsers? #

Absolutely. You can install the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge (the current mainstream version) on Windows 7—it’s fully supported on this OS. Once installed, it will exist completely independently from IE 11:

• They have separate program files, user profiles, and cache storage.
• IE 11 will stay intact and usable for your existing needs.
• Note: The old EdgeHTML-based version of Edge (pre-Chromium) is exclusive to Windows 10, so you can’t install that on Windows 7—but the Chromium version is the one you’ll want for modern web testing anyway.

2. Are there MS Edge simulators available for testing? #

Yes, and the most reliable options are:

• Chromium Edge’s built-in DevTools: Once you install Edge, press F12 to open the developer tools. You can simulate different Edge versions, device types, and even network conditions directly here—this is the most accurate way to test since it uses Edge’s actual rendering engine.
• If you don’t want to install Edge right away, your existing Chrome 66 (also Chromium-based) has similar DevTools that can mimic Edge’s behavior, though it won’t be 100% identical to the real thing.

3. Does selecting the MS Edge option in IE 11’s F12 tools simulate Edge correctly? #

Not really, and here’s why:

• The MS Edge option in IE 11’s F12 tools is designed to simulate the old EdgeHTML-based Edge (the one that came with early Windows 10 versions), not the current Chromium-based Edge.
• Since Windows 7 can’t run the old EdgeHTML Edge anyway, this simulation only gives you a rough idea of how sites behaved on that outdated browser—not the modern Edge you’re likely targeting.
• For accurate modern Edge testing, this option isn’t a reliable substitute.
