如何在Java的byte类型中存储大于127的值(BLE设备写入场景)

How to store values greater than 127 in Java's byte type?

Java's byte is a signed 8-bit integer, meaning it natively represents values from -128 to 127. But when working with devices like BLE that expect unsigned 8-bit data, you don’t need to switch to larger types—you just need to understand how signed bytes map to the unsigned values you need.

What’s happening in your example?

When you cast int b = 160 to byte, Java uses two’s complement to wrap the value into the signed 8-bit range:

int b = 160;
System.out.println((byte)b); // Outputs -96

The binary of 160 is 10100000. Since Java reads this as a signed byte, the leading 1 marks it as negative. To get the decimal value, we calculate the two’s complement: flip the bits (01011111) and add 1 (01100000), which equals 96—so the signed value is -96.

This is exactly what you need for BLE!

Here’s the critical point: even though the Java byte shows as a negative number, its underlying 8-bit binary data is still 10100000—which is the unsigned 160 your BLE device expects. When you send this byte to the device, it will interpret those bits as an unsigned value, not a signed one.

If you want to verify the unsigned value in Java, use Byte.toUnsignedInt() to convert it back:

byte signedByte = (byte)160;
int unsignedValue = Byte.toUnsignedInt(signedByte);
System.out.println(unsignedValue); // Outputs 160

The solution for your BLE use case:

  • Cast your target unsigned 8-bit value (0-255) to byte—even if it results in a negative number.
  • Send that byte directly to your BLE device. The device will read the 8-bit binary pattern as the unsigned value you intended.

You don’t need short or int because the byte’s bit pattern is exactly what the device requires for unsigned byte input.
