I’ve been tinkering with multi-display setups on two MacBook Pros lately, so here’s a breakdown of what I’ve learned and my current configurations:

First off, this model has a hard cap of 2 external displays — I tried pushing it to 3 (using 2 Thunderbolt 2 ports plus the HDMI port) and no matter how I rearranged cables or swapped monitors, one screen would always go black. It just can’t handle that third external display.

Right now, my stable three-screen setup is:

• The laptop’s own built-in display
• A FHD external monitor connected via a Thunderbolt 2 to DVI adapter
• A second FHD external monitor connected via a HDMI to DVI adapter

This machine shares the same port layout as the 2015 model: 2×Thunderbolt ports + 1×HDMI port. Since its built-in screen is broken, I’m running it in a single-screen setup for now.
