Jupyter Notebook安装Stanza CoreNLP接口时出现AttributeError问题
Problem Description
I'm trying to use Stanza's CoreNLP interface in a local Jupyter Notebook with Python 3.7.4. The code I used is directly taken from the Stanza CoreNLP interface tutorial Colab notebook:
!pip install stanza import stanza corenlp_dir = './corenlp' stanza.install_corenlp(dir=corenlp_dir) # 设置CORENLP_HOME环境变量指向安装路径 import os os.environ["CORENLP_HOME"] = corenlp_dir
All lines before stanza.install_corenlp(dir=corenlp_dir) run without issues, but executing that line throws an AttributeError: module 'stanza' has no attribute 'install_corenlp'. I checked documentation which says this error is common with Python 2, but I'm using Python 3.7.4. Could someone explain the cause and solution?
Solution
This error usually has nothing to do with Python 2 vs 3 — here are the most likely fixes to try:
1. You're running an outdated version of Stanza
The install_corenlp helper function was added in later Stanza releases (around v1.2.0). If you installed an older version of the library, this method simply won't exist.
To fix this, upgrade Stanza to the latest stable version directly in your Jupyter Notebook:
!pip install --upgrade stanza
After upgrading, restart your Jupyter kernel and re-run your code from the start.
2. Jupyter is using a different Python environment than your pip installation
It's common for Jupyter to run in a separate Python environment, meaning the Stanza you installed via pip isn't the one being loaded by your notebook.
To verify this, run these two commands in a notebook cell:
!which python !pip --version
Check if the Python path from which python matches the path shown in pip --version. If they don't line up, install/upgrade Stanza using the notebook's specific Python environment:
!python -m pip install --upgrade stanza
3. Manual CoreNLP installation (if the above doesn't work)
If upgrading Stanza still doesn't resolve the issue (maybe due to compatibility constraints with Python 3.7.4), you can skip the helper function and set up CoreNLP manually:
- Download a Stanford CoreNLP zip package that's compatible with your Stanza version (check Stanza's docs for version matching guidelines)
- Unzip the package into your
./corenlpdirectory - Run the remaining code to set the
CORENLP_HOMEenvironment variable as you originally planned. This bypasses the need forinstall_corenlpentirely.
