How to Generate Call Graphs for Specific Functions & Interactive SVG Behavior
Generating a Call Graph for a Specific Function
Since you’re already working with flags like EXTRACT_ALL, EXTRACT_PRIVATE, and EXTRACT_STATIC (I assume you’re using Doxygen, given these parameters), targeting a specific function is totally doable with a few tweaks:
- Use the
FUNCTIONconfiguration flag: In your Doxyfile, setFUNCTION = "your_target_function_name"(swap in the exact name of the function you want to focus on). This tells the tool to prioritize that function when building call graphs. - Adjust extract flags for clarity: You can set
EXTRACT_ALL = NOto cut down on unrelated clutter, while keepingEXTRACT_PRIVATE = YESandEXTRACT_STATIC = YESif you need to include private/static functions in the target function’s call chain. - Control graph scope (optional): If you want to limit the graph to either functions that call your target (incoming calls) or functions your target calls (outgoing calls), use Doxygen’s
CALL_GRAPHandCALLER_GRAPHflags. SetCALL_GRAPH = YESto see functions your target invokes, orCALLER_GRAPH = YESto see which functions trigger your target.
Interactive SVG Behavior
Once you turn on INTERACTIVE_SVG = YES, here’s how it works:
- Clickable function nodes: The generated SVG call graph will have clickable links on every function name. Clicking a node takes you directly to that function’s documentation page—not a separate call graph by default.
- Call graphs for linked functions: Whether you see a call graph for the linked function depends on your global settings. If you’ve set
CALL_GRAPH = YESacross your config, the documentation page for each linked function will automatically include its own call graph. You don’t need to manually generate individual graphs upfront; the tool builds them alongside the docs if your settings allow it. - Quick tip: If you only care about your target function and its direct dependencies, keep
EXTRACT_ALL = NOandFUNCTIONset to your target. In this case, clicking linked functions will take you to their docs, but they won’t have call graphs unless you explicitly configure them.
