Fix for VS Code Live Server Not Responding When Clicking "Go Live"
Problem Description
I've been stuck with an issue using the Live Server extension in VS Code: clicking the Go Live icon in the bottom status bar or selecting "Open with Live Server" from the right-click menu does absolutely nothing. Even when I manually type http://127.0.0.1:5500/index.html into my browser, I get the error message: "This site can’t be reached 127.0.0.1 refused to connect." For context, I have the folder containing my index.html file open in VS Code during all these attempts.
Troubleshooting Steps I’ve Already Tried
- Confirmed Chrome is set as my default browser, and configured this explicitly in
settings.jsonwith"liveServer.settings.CustomBrowser": "chrome" - Checked and adjusted environment variables based on relevant community discussions
- Kept Live Server’s host setting at the default
127.0.0.1 - Uninstalled and reinstalled the Live Server extension entirely—no change in behavior
My Current settings.json Configuration
{ "workbench.colorTheme": "Material Theme Palenight High Contrast", "[html]": { "editor.defaultFormatter": "remimarsal.prettier-now" }, "workbench.iconTheme": "vscode-icons", "liveServer.settings.https": { "enable": true }, "liveServer.settings.CustomBrowser": "chrome", "workbench.editor.enablePreview": false, "files.autoSave": "afterDelay", "liveServer.settings.port": 0, "liveServer.settings.AdvanceCustomBrowserCmdLine": "", "liveServer.settings.ChromeDebuggingAttachment": false }
Verified Working Solution
After testing, this method fixed the issue completely:
- Open VS Code
- Go to Manage > Settings
- Navigate to Extensions > Live Server Configuration
- Locate the Settings: Https option
- Set the
enablevalue tofalse
